About Wool

Wool is one of nature's most versatile fibers. In fact, unless you have spilled something on your woolen merchandise, you may only need to clean it once or twice a year. Often a good "shaking" and "hanging" in the outside air will give you the desired clean. Below we give a few added hints, including how people used to care for woolen products (before dry cleaning).

Washing Tips and Options
  • Professional dry cleaning is the preferred method of caring for wool. This method will carefully clean your 100% wool products with the use of modern day chemicals.

  • Hand washing may be effective if done carefully. Use cold to lukewarm water with a mild detergent labeled for use on wool. The keys are water temperature and mild detergent. If you aren't sure, always err on the safe side.

  • Machine washing is also used for wool labeled with a "superwash" finish, or if the label suggests that machine washing is o.k. Follow the label instructions, or the following guidelines: cold to cool water temperature, gentle cycle, mild detergent labeled for use on wool. Again, the keys are water temperature, gentle cycle and mild detergent. If you aren't sure about your machine's water temperature only use cold, and use the most gentle cycle.
Drying Tips

Drying wool can be done in different ways. The preferred method is to line dry. However, if the product label suggests machine drying then you can follow the directions on the label. A slight fluff of 5-10 minutes on the cool drying cycle can be used for products that are labled with that care. However, overdrying wool can result in dramatic shrinkage. Use care when drying your woolen products, and remember that hanging out on the line will often give you the best result.

Cleaning Q & A

Q. What if my wool blanket picks up an odor that washing does not remove?

A. A nice quality of wool is that "airing" it out will do just that. If ever your 100% wool items seem to have an odor, just hang them out on the line, and it will remove the odor.
